Cocoa Value Chain and Livelihood Diversification Training

GCCFA conducted value chain and livelihood diversification training for its members. This activity is part of the FFF II project. It seeks to enhance people's livelihoods by increasing entrepreneurship, market access, and financing. Participants were selected from Baakoye, Amansieman, and Freedom and Unity Cocoa cooperative unions in Bekwai, Jacobu, and Juaso districts, respectively.

A representative from CSIR-CRI introduced participants to non-timber crops such as black pepper, tomatoes, chili pepper, bell pepper, cucumber, and turmeric. These crops can be cultivated alongside cocoa and are in demand locally and internationally. Furthermore, they learned about the use of cocoa byproducts in producing local soaps, animal feed, and fertilizers.
The Director of the Kumasi Business Advisory Unit (BAC) also engaged participants to present them with possible entrepreneurial and financial prospects.

At the end of the session, it was recommended that farmers conduct extensive research on the crops they intend to plant, from soil conditions to possible buyers. This will assist them overcome the challenges of poor yield and market inaccessibility.
